The theme of this special edition of Profitwise News and Views (PNV) is the "green economy" and the ramifications of new trends in renewable energy and environmentally focused development for the Midwest region. Our edition discusses the outlook for environmentally friendly renewable energy industries from the standpoint of job creation and career paths, summarizes a November conference that explored the economic value of fresh water in the Great Lakes region, and the importance of ensuring that these bodies of water are clean and preserved for future generations; and, provides some brief snapshots of policy and market responses to calls to foster environmentally sound industries (most notably renewable energy) in the Reserve District's five states. In November 2008, the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago's Consumer and Community Affairs division convened "Examining Successful Collaborations and Ongoing Barriers to Foreclosure Prevention." The foreclosure crisis has continued to impact the nation, including the Federal Reserve's Seventh District; this conference was one in a series that the Chicago Fed has organized since the foreclosure crisis emerged. The conference brought together experts who addressed the issues and concerns surrounding Wisconsin's increasing number of foreclosures.
