Money Smart Week® Feature
MSW Illinois, Iowa, and Quad Cities in Full Swing
Cities throughout Illinois and Iowa recently kicked off their Money Smart campaigns. Hundreds of events are taking place April 6-12, so be sure to check out the online calendars for information on what is available in your area.
Illinois
We are proud to have Money Smart Week underway in Rockford, Peoria, Bloomington/Normal, and Champaign County. Efforts in these areas include an impressive partner network of more than 200 organizations and businesses with more than 300 free events being offered throughout the week.
This is Bloomington/Normal's first year, with more than 50 partners dedicated to the effort seventy events will be offered to the community. One such event will be Financial Fitness...It's Priceless: A Town Forum, hosted by an Associate Dean of Illinois State University, Deborah Gentry. It is a panel discussion designed to begin a dialogue about financial literacy and the extent of financial insecurity in the local community (Normal Library 4/10 at 7pm). Many successful Money Smart Week events such as this are geared toward raising the awareness of resources available to local community residents — and helping to make them Money Smart!
Other interesting events to check out in Bloomington: Building a Strong Financial Foundation, which explains the basic concepts of investing and Meet the Builder, where consumers get a chance to ask local builders anything and everything about home buying.
Iowa and Quad Cities
Currently, more than 150 events are underway throughout Iowa and the Quad Cities. Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and the Quad Cities kicked things off with breakfast events for partners and special guests. Essay competition finalists were also present, eager to find out who would be chosen as the 2008 MSW Kid. In the Quad Cities, Chloe McGehee was selected. In Cedar Rapids the winner was Kyler Schoner, and in Des Moines, Andy Troxell walked away with the prize. The competition was open to 6th through 8th graders who were asked to write about saving for college. Each winner was given a $1,000 College Savings Iowa scholarship and will spend a year as a financial literacy ambassador for his or her city. Congratulations to all who participated!
Check out the Iowa and Quad Cities calendars for more exciting events happening April 6-12.
