Eleventh Annual International Banking Conference

Credit Market Turmoil of 2007–08: Implications for Public Policy

In conjunction with the European Central Bank, the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago will hold its eleventh annual International Banking Conference on September 25–26, 2008. This year's conference theme addresses turmoil in international credit markets and what alternative policy options should be considered. What happened in international credit markets beginning in the summer of 2007? How significant was the damage to financial markets? Why did the problems go undetected for so long, and why did they seem to appear almost overnight? How did central banks and supervisory agencies respond? Is their toolkit sufficient, or is there a need to introduce new policy tools? What are the implications for Basel II capital requirements? For the future of financial markets regulation more generally? The two-day conference will feature keynote presentations by Kevin M. Warsh, Governor, Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System; José Manuel González-Páramo, Board Member, European Central Bank; and Nout Wellink, President, Netherlands Bank and Chairman, Basel Committee on Banking Supervision.

The makeup of the conference is truly international as the audience typically consists of representatives from central banks, regulatory and supervisory agencies, trade associations, financial institutions and academic institutions from around the globe. Last year, over 150 participants from some 35 countries joined the discussion

Additional information, including the full agenda and conference and hotel registration details, will be posted on this website as they become available.
