Seventeenth Annual Economic Outlook Symposium
Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago Senior Economist and Economic Advisor William Strauss presented the consensus economic outlook using the forecasts of 35 academic and business economists. The forecasters predicted the economic expansion would continue into 2004, having its best year since 1999. Chief economists and senior executives from the auto, banking, machinery and steel industries provided an outlook on their sector. Notable researchers and strategists discussed fiscal policy and international trade.

James Tobin Symposium
The Journal of Money, Credit and Banking and the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago held a day and a half conference to mark the 35th anniversary of the publication of James Tobin's paper "A General Equilibrium Approach to Monetary Theory." That paper, which appeared in the inaugural issue of the journal, popularized the concept that came to be known as "Tobin's q," and foreshadowed much subsequent work in monetary economics. Papers presented at the conference were to be considered for publication in an issue of the journal commemorating Tobin's paper.
