Bill, Law Enforcement Officer

Federal Reserve Law Enforcement Officer,
Law Enforcement Unit

  1. Where are you from? Chicago
  2. What is your educational background? I received a B.A. in business from Lewis University. I am also a state licensed EMT.
  3. When did you start at the Bank? 1973
  4. What do you do at the Bank?

The Bank’s Law Enforcement Unit provides perimeter security, emergency planning and response for the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. Our goal is to help provide a secure and safe environment for our employees, customers, assets and stakeholders. I am a sworn federal law enforcement officer.

My normal duties include access control, entrance screening and being a CAMS (Central Alarm Monitoring System) operator. Besides manning posts, there are many other duties, like escort duty and opening/closing vaults. We attend year round training in “police” skills, especially hand gun and rifle shooting. I work the overnight shift — think late and dark.

In this job you have to be a people person. It’s what makes the work ever interesting. I interact almost daily with every department within the Bank and with individuals ranging from senior Bank management to street people. One has to have the self-disciple to interact with people of all temperaments. While customer focus is important, you have to be prepared to act to accomplish our primary goals.

  5. Why do you like working here? In the end, I think it’s my co-workers and the people in the Bank who make my job enjoyable. The Bank has a positive environment.
  6. Why would you recommend the Chicago Fed as a good place to work? The Federal Reserve is an important institution that exists for the public good. The Bank provides competitive wages and excellent benefits. The Fed also encourages professional and personnel growth.
  7. What do you do in your free time? As a shift worker, my free time is mainly used in catching-up on my sleep. I also enjoy cooking, riding my bike when the weather is nice, and I am a news junkie.
