Kyle Watson
Senior Analyst,
Market Operations Monitoring and Analysis
- Where are you from? East Brunswick, New Jersey
- What is your educational background? I received a business degree from Manhattan College in 2016, where I majored in economics, finance and global business.
- When did you start at the Bank? I started working for the bank in July 2016 as a Rotational Analyst for the Markets Group.
- What do you do at the Bank?
I work in the Mortgage Markets Directorate, which monitors and analyzes mortgage markets to inform policymakers and implements agency mortgage-backed securities and agency debt operations. My role on the team is to help conduct those operations and to assist members of the staff with analysis related to our operations as well as broader mortgage markets.
Most of what I do on a day-to-day basis involves maintaining our databases, manipulating data to show relevant and creative data visualizations and staying up to date on mortgage market developments. I joined the team only a couple months ago so I still have a lot to learn about this particular market, but as I grow in my understanding, I hope that I’ll be able to more directly contribute to written analysis for senior stakeholders at the bank.
- Why do you like working here?
I enjoy working for the bank because the environment here allows me to continuously grow and learn new things. My experience in the Rotational Analyst Program was particularly helpful because I was able to spend time with a few different teams and gain exposure to a variety of markets and opportunities. I started off learning the nuts and bolts of monetary policy in the Money Markets Directorate while getting a crash course in data handling and manipulation, followed by a slightly more markets facing rotation on the Treasury Markets team where I was able to work on some of my writing skills.
My last rotation before joining the Mortgage Markets Directorate was with the Cross Market Monitoring Directorate, where I was able to get a taste of what each part of the Markets group does and gain some understanding of how we present our ideas to policymakers. Each of these teams had their own unique challenges and lessons I feel that I can take with me throughout the rest of my career. Most importantly, I’ve been fortunate enough to work with a lot of great people who were willing to sacrifice much of their time and energy to help foster my own career development and I don’t believe that’s something you can easily find elsewhere.
- What are the attributes for someone who would be a good fit for the Fed? The Fed is a great place for anyone who’s curious and a critical thinker. It also helps if you’re interested in thinking about big picture ideas and have a penchant for public service.
- What do you do in your free time? In my free time I enjoy live music, baseball, cooking, reading and intramural sports.
