Jessa

Public Affairs Representative,
Public Affairs

  1. Where are you from? Naperville, Ill.
  2. What is your educational background? I have a B.A. in English from Indiana University with a concentration in public and professional writing.
  3. When did you start at the Bank? 2016
  4. What do you do at the Bank?

The best part of my day is interacting with individuals and groups that visit the Money Museum. We see 50,000 visitors each year, and I work hard to ensure each of their experiences is educational and enjoyable. Whether we are hosting bankers, high school students, or families touring the city, I like to find new ways to build public understanding of the Federal Reserve System.

One of my favorite projects has been managing the Fed Ambassador program, our team of Bank employees who volunteer in the museum. I also enjoy planning events and exhibits. The “Ten Dollar Founding Father” Alexander Hamilton exhibition in particular is one of which I am most proud. I find programing and publication development rewarding as well. With these projects, the Kids’ Treasure Hunt for example, I get to watch visitors be excited by material I helped create, and I can see it serve its purpose right there in front of me.

As Public Affairs Representative, I have opportunities to work on projects for our other outreach areas, including Money Smart Week, economic education, and media relations. On a final note, my role gives me many opportunities to write — which is, of course, “living the dream” for any English major.

  5. Why do you like working here? There are many opportunities to get to know other departments and interact with people with different backgrounds and roles here. The community that is built through the employee networking groups and internal events has not only led to some unique collaborative work projects for me, but great friendships as well.
  6. What makes for a successful Chicago Fed employee? Someone who can have a good balance between respecting tradition, process and protocol, but is also confident in pitching new ideas and unafraid when asking, “Is there a better way to do this?” Being able to pick up on acronyms quickly is certainly a plus too.
  7. What do you do in your free time? After 5p.m. I focus on my career in Chicago’s various intramural sport and social clubs. Although it is my rookie year, these are my favorite activities, and I have been well trained.
