Supervision and Regulation

Supervision and Regulation Department

While you may think of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago as primarily an economic and financially focused organization, there are a broad range of meaningful career opportunities that serve to challenge and engage our Supervision and Regulation team.

The Supervision and Regulation (S&R) department seeks to promote a safe, sound and stable banking and financial system that supports the growth and stability of the U.S. economy. S&R supervises and regulates state member banks, bank holding companies and foreign banking organizations within the Seventh District (most of Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin and all of Iowa).

Our Culture

The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago supports and fosters a diverse and inclusive work environment where employees are respected, treated fairly and given equal opportunities to perform to their potential. We value different backgrounds, experiences, styles, approaches and ideas. We strongly believe that this enables us to achieve our goals, serve our stakeholders and become a higher-performing organization.

Career Opportunities

Professional development, career growth and community impact are a central part of working in S&R. Below you will find a brief overview of the most common roles available within the department.

Bank Examiners

Examiners assess the financial condition and management of financial institutions. Much of the work requires travel (up to 50 percent of the time), as examiners determine if the firms are complying with laws, regulations and guidance that have been established to protect borrowers, depositors and the financial system as a whole.

Risk Management Specialists

By conducting highly detailed analysis of regional economies, banking sectors and the nation’s financial system, risk specialists are subject-matter experts who provide insight on emerging risks and challenges.

Quantitative Specialists

Quantitative specialists use advanced quantitative skills to design, develop, assess and implement complex risk measurement models. They also provide assessments of financial institutions to determine risk exposure.

We have a variety of analysts who support the supervisory process or focus on the department’s business and operational strategies. These individuals conduct analysis, perform research, and develop and generate analytical tools.

Other Business Professionals

We also have opportunities for professionals who specialize in information technology, business analytics, communications and other support functions. Roles for talented people leaders and other subject-matter experts are available as well.

What We Look For

We are seeking individuals who hold themselves to the highest standards, and flourish in an open, collaborative and innovative environment. Our most successful employees are creative problem solvers who are versatile and take initiative. Additionally, they have strong critical thinking and communication skills.

We also look for individuals who:

  • Exemplify the Bank’s mission
  • Are driven, adaptable and able to respond favorably to rapidly changing priorities and directives
  • Demonstrate a willingness to work in a team environment
  • Have experience in the banking or consulting industries, or possess an understanding of accounting, finance or economics (preferred, but not required)
