In thinking about the liberalization of branching and product line restrictions on commercial banks, Americans should not ignore the banking history of other countries. Many observers have relied on casual appraisal of those experiences to conclude that the adoption of unrestricted interstate banking would lead us to duplicate the concentrated banking structures of other countries.
