Economic Perspectives, Vol. 15, 3rd, No. 5, September 1991
Energy dependence and efficiency
The intent of this article is two fold. In order to set the stage, it first reviews recent developments in the oil markets. Next, it surveys concepts of energy and oil-use dependence as well as energy and oil-use efficiency. It proposes measures of dependence and efficiency and uses these measures to compare developments in the world's six heaviest consumers of energy--Canada, France, West Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United Statesduring the period 1970 to 1988.
