The Chicago Fed’s MuniTrack is an interactive data platform designed to show financial conditions in the U.S. municipal bond market. This roughly $4 trillion market is characterized by significant concentration of retail investors, high information fragmentation, and tens of thousands of small issuers—public institutions such as municipalities, school districts, and utilities that rely on the market to fund major projects.
Using secondary market transaction-level data and primary market issuance data from the Municipal Securities Rulemaking Board (MSRB) and The Bond Buyer, MuniTrack provides a unified view of secondary-market roundtrip transactions costs and primary-market issuance activity and pricing. The tracker is intended to support policymakers, market participants, and researchers by offering transparent, high-frequency indicators of the municipal bond market. We update the figures in Section 1 and 3 monthly and the figures in Section 2 and 4 quarterly, and we provide downloadable CSV files, a methodology appendix, and a more complete PDF version of the tracker.
