A note on the increase in noninsured commercial banks

According to data published in the Annual Statistical Digest of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, the number of commercial banks that are not insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) more than tripled between 1970 and 1986 from fewer than 200 to more than 600.
