Hog butchers no longer: 20 years of employment change in metropolitan Chicago
In this article, we present the results of
research into the causes of employment change
in metropolitan Chicago over the last 20 years.
Our results are obtained from a detailed economic
model developed at the Regional Economics
Applications Laboratory (REAL).'
Using the model to identify the forces underlying
employment changes in metropolitan Chicago
over the last two decades, we found that
changes in consumer preferences were the
major cause of employment increases in the
services industry.
